I READ with interest Barry Proctor's comments in this week's Commercial Motor (9 June). Aside from the fact that almost every professional in the country is required by the terms of their career to undertake periods of training each year.! for one hope that most of the proposed training isn't classroom based, but reflects concerns about the so-called professionalism that many HGV drivers seem to lack.

It would be nice to assume that many operators faced with a compulsory training requirement will take the opportunity to ensure their drivers spend a great deal of that time actually devoted to improving their driving skills. While there is obviously a need for drivers to spend a bit of their time in the classroom learning, the more time a driver can be out away from the job and being educated in improved driving the better.

As I recall, every restriction on HGV drivers' ability to do their job has come on the back of a lack of concern shown by a sizable section of the HGV community, from speed limits to drivers' hours.

Surely here is an opportunity for drivers and the hauliers who employ them to grasp the nettle and show the country that professional drivers are just that — professional.
