RECENT news confirms the statements reiterated in these columns, during the past few weeks, that the trade of the country is definitely on the up-grade. Government returns show that unemployment is less than it has been for two years, whilst the building industry has reached such a stage that the demand for bricks has over

come the supply. This' .is, no doubt, Partly due to several big housing schemes which are being Pushed forward by various Municipalities.

The drapery and clothing trades continue to be active. Factories producing cotton frocks, beach wear; sports clothes and swimming. suits. ere work,. lag overtime in the effoit to cope with'

record sales. The problem of rush orders, according to some reperts, is acute, particularly in respect of transport. The demand for hides and leather is active, also that for chemical products.

There is a proposal afoot to erect a central cattle market in Leicester Kesteven C.C. proposes to recondition the SIeaford Poor Law Institution at a cost of i22,000, Leicester C.C. is to adapt Bosworth Park for a nurses' home, Stoke-on Trent T.C. is to proceed with a slum-clearance scheme to extend over a period of five years, involving the clearance of 25 areas and the erection of 3,500 houses.

Leicester C.C. proposes to proceed with three road and three bridge schemes costing 1130,000, Wilson Lovatt and Sons, Ltd.,. is to erect a reception block and convalescent block at the mental hospital, Berry Wood, for Northants T.C. H. Boot and Sons, Ltd., Sheffield, is to erect 214 houses, ell Warley Estate, Surtethwick.

Cadbury Bros., Ltd., is to embark upon building schemes the total cost of

which is to be £196,000. Birmingham E.C. is to build a technical, commercial and art college. Leicester Corporation is to spend 154,000 on the completion of a wing for the colleges of art and technology, £33,000 on the .Domestic :Science College, is0.000 on the Wyggeston boys' school, and £11,600 on reconditioning 24 other schools. Birmingham T.C. is to go ahead with several slum

clearance schemes. "
