NORTHERN IRELAND-BASED transport operator McBurney has placed an order for 50 Volvo FH-460 tractor units, including a flagship FH 16-700 In a deal estimated at 24m.

With all the trucks being Euro-5 compliant, the haulier stands to save £25,000 on annual VED (or El .5m over the vehicles' six-year operating life).

Norman McBurney, managing director and founder of McBurney Transport, says: "We've been using Volvos for 40 years, and in our experience the Euro-5 engines in the FHs are more fuel efficient that the previous versions, plus, we save £500 a year in road tax on each vehicle thanks to the RPC [Reduced Pollution Certificate],"

In addition to the FH-460s, the operator has also ordered the UK's first 6x2 FH16-700 as a flagship vehicle and as a driver reward.

Scheduled for September delivery, the new trucks form part of McBumey's six-year vehicle replacement programme and, when delivered, will replace a variety of older Volvos, Scanias and MANs.

• Iveco Defence Vehicles has delivered the first consignment of 33 Trakker 6x6 trucks to ALC in a £15.5m deal.

The contract marks the single largest Trakker order ever placed in the UK and will see Iveco supply a total of 206 vehicles to ALC, which provides the Ministry of Defence with its 'C' class vehicles for civil engineering and military infrastructure development.
