Rocketing to 40
THIS WEEK THE world celebrates the 413th anniversary of the launch
of the Apollo 11 spacecraft, the first manned flight to the moon.
Although the Saturn V rocket carrying the crew blasted to 15,647mph
to escape the earth's pull, the journey started at a rather more sedate imph on the back of one of the world's largest trucks. Weighing in a 2,5 million kilos, the two 'Crawlers' Nasa had built for the moon missions are still in use today, carrying Space Shuttles from the construction buildings to the launch pad. Each is powered by two 2,750-horsepower diesel engines and could carry around a 5.5 million kilo load. They consume around 125,7 gallons of diesel per mile,
