Mitsubishi Fuso Canters to share engine

THE WHOLE OF MITSUBISHI Fuse's Euro-5 Canter range will share a common engine and gearbox, with claims of improved power, fuel economy, running costs and payload. The existing 3.0 and 4.9-litre engines are being replaced by a single 3.0-litre diesel from Fiat Powertrain, mated to a new lighter ZF six-speed gearbox.

The new engine follows the trend towards longer stroke, with DOHC, 16 valves, variable geometry turbocharging and common-rail injection. Three power ratings, 129hp/300Nm, 143hp/370Nm and 173hp/430Nm are available. Unusually within one model range, the two lower ratings use EGR and a DPF to achieve Euro-5 emissions levels, while the higher output is achieved by SCR with AdBlue. Daimler claims that economy improvements of around 5-8% have been achieved in "real world" test conditions.

The top engine will arrive in February, with an Enhanced Environmentallyfriendly Vehicle (EEV) option soon after.

A new 5.5-tonne model joins the existing 3.5, 6.5 and 7.5 tonne line-up. Single and crew cabs, with two trim levels, are available on wheelbases from 2,500mm to 4,470mm, with a 300mm narrower cab's UK availability undecided.

Weight savings come from the lighter engine and gearbox, a plastic fuel tank and on 3.5-tonne models, replacement of the spare wheel by a puncture repair outfit.

Daimler quotes a kerb weight of a 7.5-tonne chassis cab as 2,480kg, offering a 5,020kg body/payload allowance.

• Mitsubishi Truck manager Mike Mudie is retiring this week. Daimler is taking the opportunity to revise the UK company structure to integrate the Canter product more closely with the Mercedes-Benz brand, with more management functions being shared by both. The Mitsubishi name will vanish from the vehicles, although there is still uncertainty over when it will disappear completely to leave just Fuso.
