MONDAY the Daniels of transport move into the 's den of the general public. 1.30am 16 38-tonne "Juggerts" will move off from NEC, gingham on a 1,000 mile rgy conservation run.

le route takes in the M5, M6, environs of Liverpool, Cara, Newcastle, Edinburgh, :h, Stirling, Glasgow, Pen, Leeds, Sheffield, Leicester, ord, and back to NEC.

ractive units of various axle figurations have been enId for the run by Bedford, land, Foden, Seddon Atkin, MAN, lveco, Scania, Daf, Volvo. Almost within the I hour ERF withdrew two of hree vehicles.

ll of the vehicles will be led by BP Oils Ltd, while dem and tri-axle trailers, ich will run fully loaded, are ig supplied by TIP and Crane ehauf.

he purpose of the four-stage is to measure fuel consumpt and productivity, and Lucas nzle Instruments will be asuring the speed, productivand fuel consumption on h stage and overall. The wins will be announced on Just 27 when we will be pubing a 32-page report on the addition to the energy iservation aspect we are tak ing the opportunity to advance our "better image" campaign. Charter PR of St Albans has produced eye-catching posters and banners bearing the slogan "Better trucks benefit you" with the ageless Lord Kitchener stressing the point.

More than 120 newspaper, radio and television representatives have been invited to cover the event. Each evening the public will be able to come along and look over the vehicle, meet the drivers and talk to the company representatives.

We see this as a first-class opportunity for the industry to introduce the man in the street to the new heavyweights. It is also a step towards educating the uninitiated media to the benefits of man's best friend — the lorry.

We look forward to meeting readers along the route and at overnight stops. The first vehicle should be booking in each day at around 4pm.

CM and Lucas Kienzle will make the overall fuel economy and productivity awards while major component manufacturers Cummins, Rolls Royce, Gardner, and Spicer Drive Train have volunteered awards for the vehicles with the best fuel consumption for each of the fourday stages.
