Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

I WAS DISTURBED to read your article on "Election '83" (CM May 28) in which you state "The current Labour-controlled GLC has virtually frozen the road building programme".

I do hope your subscribers don't buy your magazine for accurate information because nothing could be further from the truth. The Labour GLC has in fact increased expenditure on new road building and for this year we intend to spend in excess of E39 million, which is 30 per cent higher than the programme we inherited from the Tories.

DAVE WETZEL

GLC, Westminster

In 1979 the GLC Tory administration spent £20.38m on new road building. This year the Labour GLC plans to spend £39.73m. In real money terms, therefore, there has been little or no increase. This information became available after the item Mr Wetzel refers to had been published.

The GLC has further advised us that a £21m expenditure has now been cancelled. — EDITOR.
