SOME COACHES are nothing more than "high speed mobile greenhouses" a Tory MP has claimed.

New Northfield Tory MP Roger King told CM this week he thought the construction rules were inadequate and he wanted to see them toughened up.

Mr King, who used to be involved in the building of coaches, was commenting after Junior Transport Minister Lynda Chalker told him that the Government was pressing for higher standards for the strength of seat and coach bodies through the auspices of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe.

Mrs Chalker turned down Mr King's request to lower the speed limit of older coaches that did not meet modern safety requirements. Bus and coach operators were required to satisfy the traffic commissioners about their maintenance arrangements, and the commissioners were prepared to take action against those operators who did not meet the necessary standard she said.

Mr King said he bel coach construction, partici roof strength, was "very indeed". Passenger protect the event of an accident wa dequate. "The Governmer mits that since it is workinc. European scheme, what that might be.

"Some of the coaches th, on the roads are nothinf high speed mobile greenhc There appears to be very strength in the roof."

Although only 26 peopli been killed in the past yE coach accidents, that wa more than the previous yea there had also been 6,000 ries which must have invol lot of accidents.

"I would be interested to whether construction played a part in causing accidents." Mr King said hi particularly worried abou stability of high speed dc decker coaches, with passe. seated on top, when skidded.

Mrs Chalker insisted coaches had a very good record.
