• A protest at the proposed closure of the heavy goods vehicle testing station at Alvaston in Derbyshire was made in the Commons last week by Mr Walter Johnson (Labour, Derby South).

There would be increased costs for both industry and the consumer, he said, and he asked to what extent the alternative stations some 30 miles away would be capable of handling the additional influx of vehicles.
