Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ABLOWN four-stroke oil engine is offered by Akticbolaget Volvo, of Goteborg, Sweden, in their L395 Titan range of commercial vehicles, the new engine giving a • b.h.p. increase ef approximately 25 per cent.

The engine is the T-D 96 AS, with a capacity of 9.6 litres, and is blown by a small turbo-compressor mounted directly on the exhaust manifold. A maximum blower speed of 36.000 r.p.rn: is obtainable, the highest permissible exhaust temperature being 680° C., and power is boosted up to 185 b.h.p. at an

engine speed of 2,200 r.p.m. The unblown engine gives 150 b.h.p. at the same speed. Torque is increased to 529 lb.-ft. at 1,400 r.p.m.

The compressor is air cooled and weighs 37i• lb, Ball bearings are used for the rotor mounting. Maximum pressure ratio is 1 : 5.

Another change in the Volvo range affects the L385 series, now to be

known as the Viking. Larger cylinder liners have been fitted, increasing the cubic capacity from 6.13 litres to 6.7 litres. The engine now develops 115 b.h.p. at 2,200 r.p.m. and 290 lb.-ft. torque at 1,200 r.p.m.

THE fitting of a Perkins P4 exhaust! type oil engine to an S.D. Freighter has been completed by T.G.B. Motors, Ltd., Burnley. This work has been carried out in such a manner that little structural alteration has been necessary and all controls, including tipping-gear drive, have been left unaltered.

Preliminary tests are stated to have shown that the vehicle is giving a good performance. It is being lent to a local municipality for work under operational conditions, after which it is intended that details of operating costs shall be compiled.

The conversion is stated by T.G.B. Motors, Ltd., to cost approximately £410, and in view of the little alteration called for the work can be carried out expeditiously.
