I T was alleged before the Northern Licensing Authority at Newcastle upon Tyne, last week, that Crook and Willington Carriers, Ltd., Bishop Auckland, had paid the British Transport Commission 0,000 for a heavy solidtyred vehicle that was not worth more than 000. The vehicle was offered for sale as unit 726 and described as a 45-tonner first registered on August 1, 1947. When delivery was taken it was discovered that the date of registration was August 1, 1944.

Crook and Willington applied to replace the vehicle by one weighing about 26 tons. If the application were granted, they would surrender their special A licence.

Mr. William Elliott, managing director, said that when he submitted the tender he knew that it would be impossible to operate the vehicle for any length of time, as it had had its day. The vehicle had not been used by the B.T.C. since the end of 1952.

The hearing will be resumed later this month.
