I EG1SLATION to amend the Trans-L-4 port Act. 1953. to allow greater elasticity in disposal was suggested by a Conservative Member of Parliament, Mr. Aubrey Jones, in a letter to The Times on Monday. Thought should, he said, be given to it between now and the autumn.

His views may well reflect those of . Conservative backbenchers. One of his proposals echoed an amendment which, with Labour support, he unsuccessfully sponsored during the committee stage of the Bill in the House of Commons in December, 1952.

This was that sales would be facilitated if Section 5 were amended to allow the shares in companies set up for disposal to be sold in parcels to different people over a period.

"May not the giving of such a permission make it possible for private capital to be introduced gradually while the companies are establishing themselves with a continuing trading record. instead of their coming to sale from the moment of birth?" he asked.

"Secondly, Section 4 lays down in detail the proportions of each category of vehicles which the Transport Commission may retain," he said. " May it not be that there are buyers for those vehicles which the Commission has in effect no alternative but to retain (e.g., the Pickfords undertaking) while there are no buyers for some of the interests which the Commission is required to sell (e.g., general haulage)? Would not denationalization be facilitated if this were recognized and the Commission allowed greater flexibility to sell properties for which there may be buyers?"
