Proposals and Purchases.

The Haslingden Town Council has asked the L.G.B. to sanction a loan of 21015 for the acquirement of a motor tip wagon.

The L.C.C. is, owing to late delivery, determining a contract with the "Cedes"' Electric Traction Co., Ltd., for the supply of petrol electric chassis ordered in October last, and is purchasing a chassis in substitution from Leyland Motors, Ltd.

The West Ham Electric Lighting Committee is buying a battery vehicle, from Edison Accumulators, Ltd., at £700.

The Metropolitan Asylums Board is apparently satisfied with its own experiments in the construction of motor-ambulance bodies, and is proceeding further in this direction.

The Bradford Education Committee has received sanction to borrow £739 to purchase a motor ambulance.

The West Bridgford U.D.C. has decided to purchase another motorbus.

The Southampton Corporation Tramways Committee is placing orders for three motorbuses, at a cost of 22600.

Oxford's Volte Face.

The Oxford Electric Tramways Co., Ltd., was authorized in 1909, Jointly with the National Electric Construction Co., Ltd., to convert the horse-tramway system of Oxford to electric traction. Subse(luent events, which have been recorded in our pages, have changed this intention. The interested companies now have a Bill before Parliament to sanction their abandonment of electric traction and the conversion of the tramways company into a motor-omnibus company. Thus has Oxford, which has a resident population of some 54,000, given a lead to other cities which are at the moment afflicted by rails in their streets.

A Fine Single-,deck Type.

The Leyland bus, of which we reproduce a photograph on this page, may be taken as typical of what is most-recent single-deck construction. These machines are very fine models indeed, both as regards chassis and body. The latter has two compartments, with a clerestory roof and rear entrance, and provision for smokers ; thel is total seating capacity for 29. An emergency door is provided at the front, and the key for this is kept in the driver's locker. A complete dynamo lighting outfit is carried, and other special fittings include splashguards and lifeguards. The rear axle is the latest worm-driven Leyland, and the engine is of the 36-40 h.p. type.

D6 The rumoured inteation of the directors of the National Steam Car Co., Ltd., to make a new issue of capital at an early date, is officially denied.

The receipts of the National Steam Car Co., Ltd., for the week ended 7th July, 1914, were 24629. This shows an increase of £1376 over the corresponding period of last year.

The receipts of the Tramways (M.E.T.) Omnibus Co., Ltd. for the week ended 4th. July, 1914, were £10,454, and for the Gearless Omnibus Co., Ltd., 2497. These show an increase of 24628, and a decrease of £106 respectively as against the corresponding period of last year. • Weybridge Licences.

The Weybiidge U.D.C. has granted licences to the Guildford and District Motors, Ltd., and has refused licences to the L.G.O.C.

Bury's Latest.

The Cleansing Superintendent to the Bury Corporation, Mr. T. H. Turner, has recently taken delivery of his new Leyland chassis, with interchangeable tank and wagon bodies. A special turbine-pump arrangement of distribution is included, in order to. secure a 47 ft. spread of water. The machine can be used in emergency at fires. Sheffield's Bill.

Fire Brigade Matters.

Considerable progress is being made with the sale of small fireengines for estates and villages, and Dennis Bros., Ltd., is probably in the best position to supply this type.

The Stow-market U.D.C. is debating the purchase of a steamer or a modern petrol equipment. No course of action has so far been settled.

Leylands at Barrow.

The annual conference of professional fire-brigade officers took place at Barrow-in-Furness on the 2nd and 3rd inst. It was a representative gathering, and various interesting papers were submitted and discussed. Leyland Motors, Ltd., put four motor chars-à-bancs at the disposal of the conference, and interesting trips were enjoyed through the Lake District An excellent demonstration of hill-climbing and vehicle-control was incidentally given to members of the party. The same vehicles were available in connection with visits to: the airship sheds of Vickers, Ltd., and to Furness Abbey. The visitors also witnessed a display with the latest, standard type of Leyland motor fire-engine.
