Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Dry-ice cooling is £600 cheaper

REFRIGERATION by dry ice (solidified carbon dioxide) has been chosen by Van den Berghs and Jurgens Ltd for two 12.2m (40ft) long Coldsaver refrigerated containers supplied by Freight Bonallack. The Coldsavers are being used for the trunk movement of Cool Country brand chilled products.

The dry ice refrigeration system was preferred to other types because of its relatively low initial cost (about £600 cheaper than its nearest rival claims Bonallack) and its ability to sustain long periods of shut-down without deterioration of operational efficiency.

The containers were designed in consultation with ICI Ltd to make the maximum use of ICI Drikold solid carbon dioxide blocks. These blocks are carried in an external bunker projecting from the front so there is no encroachment on the load space. Air which is cooled by the blocks is blown by a thermostatically controlled electric fan through two 127mm (5in) square ceiling ducts which distribute the flow evenly along the length of the container.

The insulation of each container is by means of polyurethane rigid foam 76mm (3in) thick in the roof, floor and front wall, 70mm (2iin) thick in the side walls and 51mm (2in) thick in the doors. This is sufficient to maintain an internal temperature of between 3 and 5°C (37° to 41°F) with a full load of yoghurts for a period of at least nine hours with a maximum charge of dry ice of 45kg (1001b). IN just nine hours, a 12.2m (40ft) semi-trailer was marked up with Kraft Foods Ltd's livery using Controltac film from 3M.

This is the claim made by 3M who estimated that to apply the livery in paint would have entailed a total off-road time of three to four days; half of that time would have been required simply to mark out the trailer before signwriting.

For this particular job the letters were cut out and prespaced on a backing to make the actual application easier. The surround to the word Kraft was supplied in four pieces with about in overlaps.

The technique used was to start at the bottom centre of the top arch of this surround and to " squeegee " along each corrugation, working upwards one corrugation at a time.

The Controltac film can be applied over a temperature range from 4' to 38°C (40 to 100°F), claims 3M, thus allowing application work to be carried out outside if required.
