A Vulcan Model Built Particularly for Pneumatic-tyre Equipment, and to Meet the Need Which Exists for More British Vehicles of this Capacity.

OF CONSIDERABLE interest to users of commercial motor vehicles will be the news that the Vulcan Meter and Engineering Co. (1906), Ltd., of Crosser's, Southport, will exhibit at. the Scottish Motor Show, on the stand occupied by Bryson Bros. (Motors), Ltd., a new 20-25-cwt. chassis, which, in the case of the particular example staged, will be equipped as a complete van.

Until now the VulcanCo. Co. have concentrated their efforts on the production of 30-cwt. and 2-ton chassis built particularly for running on solid tyres. The new model is, however, equipped with pneumatic tyres as standard; actually these are 895 inn). by .135 mm. Duidops, single at the front and twin at the rear, and carried on pressed-steel artillery wheels of the detachable type.

The wheelbase of the new chamis is 10 ft. 6 ins., the track 4 ft. 8 ins., and the chassis .pricea£36C1, an extra charge of 25 being made for the electric lighting equipment, if this be desired..

The power unit, has four cylinders, 80 ram. bore and 130 mei. stroke, giving an R.A.C. rating o!15.9 h.p. This com

pares with the engine Of 90 gem, bore and 130 mm. stroke which is utilized on the two larger models.

Lubrication is attended to by a gear pump, etich supplies oil under pressure to the main bearings, whilst. excess oil flows to troughs into which dip the bigends. The valves are all situated on the near side, the tappets are adjustable, and the gear is enclosed by an easily detachable cover. Ignition is by a magneto of British manufacture, and carburation is -attended to by a Zenith instrument.

Cooling is effected by a radiator of the gilled-tube pattern, the top and bottom .tanks of which are enclosed in a separate aluminium casing of pleasing design. This is a feature for which Vulcan vehicles have been noted for -some considerable time. In the event of any repairs being required by the tubular centre, the whole aluminium casing can be removed with ease, and is thus free from risk of damage. Cooling is assisted by a powerful fan, and the cooling water

is circulated by an efficient pump. • Between the engine and the gearbox is a Ferodo-faced cone clutch, provided with an easily adjustable spring; next to this is the compound universal joint.

The gearbox itself is a square aluminium case with a lid which covers practically the whole -of the top. This box is suspended from the main frame at three points, and is thus free from any risk of strain through possible frame flexion. It provides four speeds forward and a reverse' the7gear ratios being as follow :—Top, 6.5 to 1 ; third, 10.1 to 1; second, 16.7 to 1; first, 26 to 1; reverse, 34.7 to 1. An open cardan shaft conveys the drive from the gearbox to a fullfloating axle with overhead worm drive. The front axle is a strong steel stamping of I section.

Steering is by worm and complete worm wheel, provision being made for utilizing the worm wheel in four different positions, thus giving the gear a very long wearing life.

Semi-elliptic springs are utilized both at the front and at the rear. Engine control is by an accelerator pedal and hand throttle. The last-named and the ignition lever are situated on the steering wheel.
