Thefts

Northamptonshire: On 1-2 February, at the Truck Stop, Junction 15a Northbound Services M1, offenders gained access to the rear cargo area of a lorry that was secured only by a plastic tie while the vehicle was parked and the driver asleep. Nine pallets of Zydol capsules (strong pain killers) were stolen.

Thames Valley: Ninety-eight pairs of new, boxed Asics running shoes were stolen on 11 January from a curtainsider parked at Cherwell Valley Services, Moto Service Area, Northampton Road, A43.

West Yorkshire: A total of 297 GPX4500 Universal Metal Detectors were stolen from a trailer while parked overnight on 12-13 January in Common Road, Bradford. The consignment consisted of 304 metal detectors and a total of 297 were stolen, valued at around £330,000.

Essex: Michelin contacted TruckPol about a theft of a consignment of tyres on 24 January from an industrial estate in Basildon. The tyres had arrived from Spain but were too late to be unloaded at the Michelin warehouse, and the driver parked nearby on an industrial estate. Overnight, the cord around the curtain on the trailer was cut and the seals removed from the doors. Upon checking the load, Michelin staff found that 45 truck tyres were missing.

North Yorkshire: On 26-27 January, two LGVs parked in a lay-by on the B6480 at Bentham, Lancaster, had their loads of 3m x 2.5m aluminium panels stolen. The panels, which had been strapped onto the trailers with chain straps, had been placed on the two stand-alone trailers at 5:30pm awaiting collection. Overnight, criminals stole the panels by removing the chain straps, which they left at the side of the trailers. The value of metal stolen was £42,000.

RECOVERED GOODS TO IDENTIFY

Humberside: Police are requesting assistance in identifying property recovered from a container in Hull, which is believed to have been stolen from lorries throughout the country. Although the officers in the case have successfully identified a lot of the property, the following items remain unidentified: Marks & Spencer clothing; Aldo shoes; Dorothy Perkins shoes; Moda in Pelle shoes; Asda shoes, slippers and cartons of sticking plasters; and Pied a Terre shoes.

West Midlands: Police have recovered six bags of toner cartridges: Magicolour Konica Minolta 1600 series AOV30CH high-capacity toner cartridge; and Magicolour Konica Minolta 2400/2500 series standard capacity toner cartridge – yellow.

VEHICLE THEFTS IN DETAIL

• On 28 January, a lorry registration HIG3536 was stolen from the Stena Ferry Terminal, Cairnryan in Stranraer. This distinctive tractor unit is owned by Manfreight, which does not normally operate in Scotland.

• On 27-28 January, a plainwhite 45ft tri-axle refrigerated trailer with no distinguishing marks was stolen from Freebournes Road, Witham, Essex.

The fridge unit bears the manu facturer’s logo “Carrier” and there are two sets of numbers on the trailer.

The NFT trailer number is 288; the hirers number is TF4179.

• On 24-25 January, an articulated trailer was stolen from the Fishery Pier at Kyle Of Lochalsh. The Remagro trailer has two large generator engines mounted underneath and a refrigeration unit mounted above. The trailer contained four large prawn tanks and

was secured with five padlocks and chains. It is a very distinctive trailer and is valued at £30,000. Police intelligence suggests the trailer may have been removed by a red tractor unit.

HOTSPOTS Bedfordshire

• Two foreign-registered vehicles were targeted while parked overnight at Toddington Services, M1, on 15-16 January. Both vehicles had their curtains slashed, and one vehicle had part of its load of Michelin tyres stolen.

Berkshire

• Lorry drivers parked up overnight on the A34 Newbury Bypass have been targeted by fuel thieves.

Derbyshire

• A Scania parked up overnight on the A42 at Diseworth was attacked and 175 litres of fuel stolen while the driver was sleeping.

Thames Valley

• Police have reported an increase in lorries being targeted for fuel in the area. A number of drivers have found their fuel tanks tampered with and diesel stolen.

ARRESTS Staffordshire

• Police have reported that they arrested three males who were disturbed slashing the curtain on a parked LGV and then stealing goods from the vehicle.

The three offenders, from Liverpool and Runcorn, are now on bail pending further enquiries from the police.
