INDUSTRY, Government and the environmental lobby are to cooperate in a series of studies of how to solve environmental problems caused by lorries.

The Department of Transport has selected parts of England outside London in which the County Surveyors Society and the Civic Trust will co-operate with it in assessing what solutions may be applied.

Transport Secretary Nicholas Ridley said last week: "This comprehensive approach should enable us to take a balanced attitude to a subject which is too often approached from a blinkered and partisan position.

"We want to involve the county highways authorities, local community groups and the vehicle operators in this work, recognising that we need the lorry but must respect and improve the environment in which people live."

The Civic Trust welcomed the announcement this week, saying it hoped the measures would tackle problems which the current by-pass programme is incapable of overcoming.

The Freight Transport Association is to make available its monitoring of traffic management measures.
