Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Proposals to increase the statutory minimum wages for road haulage workers and to grant extra holidays have been circulated by the Road Haulage Wages Council this week.

• If implemented, the increases will involve payment to drivers of vehicles of up to one-ton capacity of between £14.07 and £22.65 in London and £13.97 and £20.40 outside London. This compares with the previous wages of £12.43 to £18.25 in London and £12.33 to £18 elsewhere.

Other ranges proposed, with existing rages in brackets, are: 1-ton to 21-ton capacity from £20.65 to £23.03 (£18.25 to £20.63) in London; and from £20.40 to £22.78 (£18 to £20.6 elsewhere).

Rates for drivers of tractive units not exceeding 2 tons unladen used for furniture removals only will be increased from £18.25 to £20.65 in London and from £18 to £20.40 in the provinces at the bottom of the scale. In addition, pay for drivers of similar vehicles of between 8 and 12 tons capacity in London will increase to £21.18 (£18.78) for the lower weight and £22.03 (£19.63) for the higher capacity vehicles.

There are corresponding increases proposed for foremen, removal packers, porters and other road haulage workers.

Workers employed on the carriage of indivisible loads will also receive increases.

An extra week's holiday after two years service is proposed this year and after one years's service next year and afterwards.

Notice No RH(97) has been circulated by the RHWC, 12 St James's Square, London SW1.
