I suppose "Coras Iompair Eireann" sounds quite attractive if you know how to pronounce it, but "CIE" seems somehow a very formal title for anything in that green and relaxed land. My choice would be "Shamrock and Rambler"—but somebody in England got there first.
Anyway what's in a name so long as the results are good. CIE director and general manager Frank Lem ass had plenty of results to talk about at a recent Press conference in Dublin. The undertaking's coach tours carried 59,513 passengers in 1967—a six-fold increase in seven years and a contribution of more than £11-in to the Irish hotel industry in meals and accommodation.
I hear that having a New York office helps, and these tours are particularly well patronized by Americans. But there are snags. A "valley" in the booking charts in June-July turned out to be directly related to the $ 50-a-head air fare surcharge imposed during that period.
Now, in order to avoid the worst impact of this, CIE is liaising with the hotels to introduce a policy whereby the overall price of tours to American visitors will remain constant regardless of air fare fluctuations.
