Mr. T. H. Campbell Wardlaw, the Newcastle upon Tyne solicitor and transport advocate, is to stand as Liberal candidate for South Shields. Mr. WardIaw, who looks after R.H.A. interests in the northern area, was formerly Under Sheriff of Newcastle, but went into private practice after the war. He is 53. Mr. H. Pearson, assistant rolling stock engineer, Rochdale Corporation Transport Department, has been appointed maintenance superintendent of Oldham Corporation Passenger Transport Department with effect from March 12.

Obituary

WEregret to record the deaths of Mr. A. H. Lake and Mr. G. W. Stubley. Mr. Lake had been managing director of Tiverton Coachbuilders, Ltd., Tiverton, Devon, since the formation of that company in 1947.

Mr. Stubley was traffic manager of Leicester Co-operative Society and died as a result of injuries received in a road accident. He was 49.

HOVERCRAFT INVENTOR GETS • R.A.C. TROPHY

THE R.A.C.'s Diamond Jubilee Trophy has been awarded to Mr. Christopher Cockerill, the inventor of the Hovercraft. The trophy, which is for outstanding contributions in the whole field of automotive transport, has only once previously been awarded since its inception in 1957.

PROVISIONAL LICENCE RESTRICTION

AS from April 1 a licensing authority may now refuse to grant further provisional driving licences unless the applicant has fulfilled certain conditions. This results from the issuing of an order by the Minister of Transport bringing into operation on that date the provisions of Section 102 (4) of the Road Traffic Act, 1960.

These provisions empower licensing authorities to refuse to grant further provisional licences where the applicant has held one during the previous 12 months unless he has submitted himself for a driving test or has satisfied the licensing authority that he has reasonable cause for not having done so.

THE following elections were made at the Coventry Area annual general meeting of the Traders Road Transport Association: chairman, Mr. J. Delicate (Courtaulds, Ltd.); vice-chairmen, Mr. H. A. Beard (Lockheed Hydraulic Brake Co., Ltd.), Mr. F. W. Evans (Humber, Ltd.), Mr. I. H. Holbrook (Standard Motor Co., Ltd.); hon. secretary, Mr. F. Moore (CourtauIds, Ltd.).

LONG-SERVICE AWARDS

lk AR.. R. D. MARSHALL, chief in engineer of Maidstone and District Motor Services, Ltd.,' was among recipients of 40-year awards at the company's long-service presentation dinner at Maidstone. He was presented with a gold wrist watch by the chairman, Mr. R. P. 111eddow. Seven of the staff qualified last year for 40-year awards and 26 for 25-year awards.
