chris.tindattfarbi.co.uk PLANS BY THE DVLA to close its entire local office network and centralise licensing functions at Swansea (pictured) will cause problems with taxing vehicles, says the PS Union. The union claims leaked documents show the government agency is planning numerous office closures around the country, with up to 1,500 job losses.
PCS officer Dave Cliff says the plan would hit hauliers and the motor trade more than individuals because of the large number of vehicles they need to tax.
Peter Lamer, MD at Thurrockbased Suckling Transport, says: "We do still use the DVLA office in Chelmsford and 1 have heard rumours that it is closing. It would cause us a problem. I think they want everyone to tax their vehicles online using a credit card, but I would need a credit card with a very high limit on it."
However, Aberdeen-based driver
Ally Shaw says: "I do it all online. I don't think it would make much difference to me. Everyone has to move with modem technology, it's just a sign of the times."
A DVLA spokesman says it has to ensure it makes the best use of its resources, adding: "We are considering how the services currently offered at DVLA's regional offices can be best provided to ensure we operate in the most efficient and cost-effective way."
