Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Like the Scania, the Volvo was well short of the 430PS target power rating, and was also down 100Nm in peak torque, with inevitable effects on its performance and economy, especially when fully loaded. Its overall fuel consumption was 7.36mpg. some 5% thirstier than the MAN, but its worst failing was its weight. These two factors combined to give the lowest scores in the performance, economy and running costs sections.

But it was not all bad news for Volvo, as the FH12 scored highest marks for its driving position. The I-Shift gearbox also impressed. gaining top scores and reinforcing its position as the benchmark for automated transmissions.

Not for the first time, we noted that the FH's front axle was too hard, marring an otherwise tranquil driving experience, which was enhanced by the lowest steady-speed noise levels.Another FH trait that we have previously raised has been addressed, however. We appreciate the benefits of ESP stability control, but its tendency to intervene sooner than necessary with a conventionally lowcentre-of-gravity trailer was both annoying and inefficient. The standard threshold has now been lowered, and there is an option to reduce the sensitivity by another 10%.

To the outside world the FH12's secret weapon is no more than a small amber lens, looking like an extra indicator next to the lower front grille. Behind it lies Volvo's ACC adaptive cruise control, and this test was our first chance to use it in real-world conditions rather than on a test track with inflatable cars.

From the driver's viewpoint there's anew pictogram on the dash information panel which shows the chosen separation distance, selected by an extra slider on a column stalk.

The version we tried is not quite the final setup, which should be available early in the new year, in that it only uses reduced engine power and the VEB to reduce speed.

The final version will also call on the service brakes to slow you to walking pace, but we saw enough to be convinced that it would be a significant aid to safety.
