Anger after driver is clamped at Lakeside store. Chris Tindall reports.

WIDESPREAD ANGER over Tesco's policy of clamping HGVs has culminated in the threat of legal action from one Kent-based operator.

Richard Matthew, MD of FU Matthew (International) Transport, plans to take on the supermarket giant after one of his drivers was forced to pay £250 to a clamping company when he parked for four minutes at a store in'Thurrock, Essex.

Matthew says only by challenging the practice of clamping on the Lakeside estate will drivers have any chance of changing its policy."! sent a letter to Tosco at their head office," he adds.

"It's not just the driver they are having a go at; it's much bigger than that. I could lose a customer and revenue over this incident." Matthew intends to issue Tesco with an invoice on behalf of his driver, followed by a County Court Summons if it fails to pay: "Then we'll go to court and let them decide who's right or wrong."

Tesco introduced clamping at the Lakeside site because it claimed trucks were damaging verges and signposts. A spokeswoman says there is an HGV park close to the supermarket that truck drivers should use. Regarding Matthew's plan for court action, she adds: "If it's a threat of legal action it's not appropriate to comment here."
