Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Cohn Bameft has been checking out Scania's engine plans.

SCANIA PLANS to hit the 2008/9 Euro-5 emissions standard with its full range of engines without using after-treatment.

CM had an unprecedented look behind the scenes at Scania's Sodertalje engine development centre recently and saw what's in the pipeline. Its Euro-4 in-line engines are already on the road using EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) and I-WI unit-injection without the urea-additive SCR system. But cooling limitations mean SCR has to be used for the Euro-416-litre V8s.

The on-SCR Euro-5 units rely on a mixture of existing technologies, although some are new to Scania. Pivotal is Scania's new XPI injection system; effectively a common-rail system running at 2,400 bar, a figure not previously seen on large engines. Backing this up will be EGR, a variable geometry turbocharger and a greater swept volume.

The Euro-5 engine will retain the packaging of the current units; materials will be picked to avoid any weight gain. A simple passive oxidising catalyst is likely to be added to improve the margin of reliable emission reduction.

Investment in urea additive infrastructure won't he wasted as this Euro-5 package combined with after-treatment should easily meet Euro-6 when it arrives.

We also looked at a running prototype of Scania's revolutionary new HCCI (homogenous charge compression ignition) engine, which promises excellent economy with virtually no NOx emissions. However, it won't be production ready for another 10 years.

0 See CM on 13 January for a round-up of where Seania is heading, along with impressions of some previously untried models.
