loss of another boss

• John Chapman has unexpectedly quit as acting head of the Road Haulage Association after being passed over for the job of chief executive.

The departure, which surprised RHA management, has focused criticism on the board of directors who stand accused of dragging out the hunt for a new head.

The board has failed to appoint anyone despite more than 100 applications for the job in the six months since the last director-general, Steven Norris, said he would go. One insider says Chapman's resignation followed being overlooked for the DG post.

Another board member claims directors are dithering because they would rather appoint a new chief from their own ranks. He says: '1 think the whole thing of advertising [the vacancy] is a sham and they are just dragging it out."

Roger Sheddick, senior vice chairman for the Midlands and Western Region, says: "The executive has dragged its feet. It is a cause for concern that we are left leaderless. And it does beg the question, 'Why did we wait so long to advertiseP' We knew Norris was leaving."

But RHA chairman John Bridge denies the search was prolonged and promises an appointment will be made before March. He adds that if no suitable candidate is found he may

run for the job: "I have had a

lot of people contact me and have had some very supportive corn ments from people from the board that would like me to be considered."
