A N experimental park and ride scheme Introduced by Leicester City Transport for the Christmas shopping period has brought very encouraging results, a sp6kesman of the department told COMMERCIAL MOTOR this week. The scheme was introduced on December 5 and is operating daily (except Sundays) until December 24.
A five-minute frequency bus service links Welford Road car park, to the south of the city, with the central shopping area. This car park was chosen for the pilot experiment as it serves four radial routes coming into Leicester from the south, south-east and southwest. Free parking is provided and the return fare on the bus is 64. for adults and 3d. for children.
Only a handful of motorists made use of the service on the first Monday but by Wednesday (market day) 300 passengers were carried with a similar number on Friday (also market day). Last Saturday, however, 1,300 passengers made use of the service and extra parking space had to be found for use tomorrow. Leicester estimates that the average passenger loading of private cars is two per car, resulting in a saving of about 700 cars entering the town centre on Saturdays alone.
