AN extension of the ferry services operated by the Continental Line and Transport Ferry Service to include Dublin in the New Year, and the construction of two new vessels with greater .

passenger accommodation, were announced on Monday night by Mr. John H. Bustard, a director of the parent company, the Atlantic Steam Navigation Co., Ltd.

Speaking at a meeting of the Birmingham Centre of the Institute of Traffic Administration, Mr. Bustard said that the new ships would be completed within five years. The interior of the vessels would be modified, compared with the converted L.S.T. transporters now in use, so that all cargo space would be located below deck and vehicles would be stored in five rows. Turntables would he used to facilitate the loading of trailers.

The new ships would enable coath parties to be accommodated in comfort and this might lead to the extension of Continental coach tours in which iho passengers could accompany the vehicles throughout the tour. He forecast the progressive extension of road ferry services, and said that in his opinion all Continental cargoes would eventually be carried by this means.

Although the vehicles of private traders, which represented a comparatively small proportion of the cargoes, had to return empty, the facilities afforded often Offset this disadvantage. Breakage of glass was, for example. virtually eliminated, and such goods as confectionery products could be delivered direct to' the shops and thus reduce distribution costs.

In the past 12 months, 40.000 vehicles had been transported by the ferry services, and the number of traders' vehicles had increased.
