Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• WITHIN the next week or two, it VV was understood, the Road Haulage Executive would begin to issue original permits, said Mr. R Morton Mitchell, chief executive officer of the Road Haulage' Association, in London, last week. In accordance with the regulations made under Section 53 of the Transport Act, 1947, all applications would be dealt with during December and January.

Certain difficulties had been encountered, he said, in notifying everyone concerned at approximately the same time, particularly in view of the rights which accrued to hauliers once they had received official notification of a decision on their' applications for original permits.

The R.H.E. intended to stagger the issue of permits over three months, said Mr. Morton Mitchell, and in the first -instance they would be dated March 1, 1950. Other cases, where the original permits would run from either April 1 or May 1, 1950, would be covered at the moment by an informal letter advising the applicant what decision be could expect. Formal notification and original permits, where granted, would follow later.

Thus, hauliers Who were not notified at the same time as others would be informed of their position to avoid uncertainty. If nonotification were received from the R.H.E., it should not be assumed that the original permit had

been refused. '

SALES of Atkinson vehicles had steadily increased, and although costs of materials and components had continued to rise. improved Methods of production had so far made it unnecessary to charge higher prices for vehicles.

Mr. W. G. Allen, chairman and managing director of Atkinson Lorries (Holdings), Ltd., made this statement at the company's first annual general meeting in London on Monday. He added that Atkinson Lorries (1933), Ltd., had been unable to satisfy, the demand at home because of Govern

ment restrictions. ,

Although no Atkinson vehicles had been exported before 1948, the company had recently reached the stipulated export quota. Atkinson vehicles were now operating in South Africa, Rhodesia, Australia; ' Portugal and Holland: _ Agents had-been appointed in Belgium, Spain, Denmark, Turkey, .Greece, Kenya. the Latin American countries and other, but solar restrictions on currency had prevented vehicles' from being exported to these territories. Applications had, however, been. made for import permits for a number of vehicles.
