Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

LONG experienced in the production of filters and cleaners for all sorts of purposes, Yokes, Ltd., 95-105, Lower Richmond Road, Putney, London, S.W.15, has recently introduced a device for producer gas. One of the main problems attached to the use of this fuel is the purification of the gas, and such a contribution to the development of the gas vehicle, coming from this concern, should be of considerable value. .

Measuring, in a typical standard form, 42 ins. long (or high) and 18 ins, in diameter and having 21-in, outlet and inlet connections, the Yokes unit, which is a combined filter and cooler, is certainly compact. Its cylindrical body is surrounded by 23 1f-in. cooling tubes, and within the cylinder, surrounding a central passage are 16 chambers of sector-shaped section. These contain the filter elements, each of which is formed of three brushes, having bristles radiating from axial holders running the length of the chambers. The bristle lengths of the brushes in the narrow parts of the sectors are shorter than those in the wider parts. Between them they completely fill the. available A26 spaces and present an effective obstruction to the particles of foreign matter in the gas stream. Perforated division plates form the sides of the brush chambers.

To clean the filter, an end cover is detached and the brushes are withdrawn, handles being provided on their ends for this purpose.

Gas enters the filter-cooler at the detachable end, flowing into an annular chamber in communication with the cooling tubes. By these it flows to a circular chamber at the other end and thence returns by the central passage to the brush chambers. At the discharge end of these a cone-shaped annulus leads the gas to the outlet.

An important point in connection with the filtering elements is that the bristles are graded throughout their length, their cleansing effect being progressive.

The maker claims that this filter is only one-third the weight of comparable cooling and cleansing systems of more orthodox design. For efficient operation it advises installation remote from the producer and in a position exposed to a cooling air stream.
