Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Action being considered to save the imperilled truckstop could include a compulsory purchase order, Roanna Avison reports.

THE ROAD HAULAGE Association (RHA) has called for concerted action to ensure that the Alconbury truckstop remains open. It will push for a Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) of the land if all else fails.

Last week Nightowl said it would close the gates of the site in Cambridgeshire on 31 August because the site owner, Wrenbridge Land, wants to develop the land (CM 9 August).

However, RHA infrastructure manager Chrys Ram pley says Alconbury is an essential facility offering secure parking for 200 trucks. "The local authority. Huntingdonshire District Council, is giving enlightened support to the truckstop and Nightowl wants to continue," she adds.

"The previous owner of the site sold it because it had been made clear the land must continue to be used as a truckstop. -It must be made clear forcefully to the new owner that no really does mean no and if necessary we will press for a compulsory purchase order of the land."

Nightowl managing director Murdo MacDonald says: -We're running out of time — there has to be action soon."

He adds that staff at the site have already been given notice.

Last week Wrenbridge associate director Nick Moore said: "[Nightowl] took a very shortterm lease of about three months which we are now coining to the end of. We have our development plans, which we aren't talking about yet."

Wrenbridge would not add to this or comment on a CPO.

Huntingdonshire District Council was unavailable for comment as CM went to press.
