Multi-jaw Vice

THE latest version of the Sevo multiple]. jaw, universal vice which is marketed by Spencer Franklin Ltd., 11 London Bridge Street, London, S.E.1, has new lug positions which enable greater application of the unit to different sizes of machine bed and varying pitches of T-slots. It can now be positioned on machine beds which have only one T-slot.

The vice is designed to eliminate the need for metal packing when a shaped or non-parallel piece of work has to be held. The necessity for making special jigs or false jaws is also reduced. Four sizes are made: the smallest, Type 0, is for use in light industries, whilst Types 1 and 2 are for general use in production and maintenance departments of most industries. The largest, Type 3, provides virtually unlimited capacity.

Silicone Oil Additive Developed

AFTER a great deal of research on the use of silicones for lubrication, Metallic Surfaces Research Laboratories Ltd. of Uxbridge, Middlesex, has developed Lubysil SC I00, which has now been put on the market through a company formed for the purpose—Silicone Lubrication Sales Ltd., 103 King's Cross Road, London, W.C.1.

Lubysil SC100 consists of " modified " silicones in a carrier liquid and, whilst being used in a similar way to additives such as those containing molybdenum disulphide already on the market, is said to represent a new approach to the problem of reducing friction and wear. Advantages of using silicones in the additive are that they will withstand high pressure and will not break down at temperatures much higher than exist in an engine or transmission unit_

Demonstrations were held recently to show the advantages of Lubysil SC 100. These included ball-bearing wear tests and running engines with a film of the additive as the only lubrication on the big end bearings. In the latter test no deterioration of the bearing surface was apparent, although the test was naturally of short duration. It was reported that on tests with a passenger car, lubricated using the additive, a total of 360 miles

had been run without oil in the engine sump. There were no detrimental effects because of the silicones from the Lubysil adhering to the metal surfaces.

A 3-oz, bottle of Lubysil costs 17s. 6d. retail, this being sufficient to treat a medium-sized car-1.5 oz. to the engine oil (providing sump capacity is not more than 7.5 pints), 1 oz. to the gearbox and 0-5 oz to the rear axle. The product should be added to engine oils in the proportion of 1 per cent for petrol engines and 2 per cent for diesels; fat gearboxes and rear axles the recommended figure is 2 per cent. For bulk users Lubysil SC100 is sold in 0.5 pint, 1 pint and 1 gal. containers at £2 12s. 6d., £4 19s. 2d. and £36 respectively, subject to discount.
