Rotherham Corporation's transport committee has appointed Mr. W. J. Evans, of Birmingham, as rollingstock superintendent.

Alderman Thraves, who is secretary of the passenger section of the Sheffield branch of the T.G.W.U., is to be the next Lord Mayor of Sheffield. Mr. Skelland is also a member of Sheffield City Council.

On Monday, Mr. H. H. Lapsley, who was previously chief interviewing officer to the North-Western Licensing Authority, took up the position of secretary of the Manchester area of the Commercial Motor Users Association. -He succeeds Mr. Howard Robinson.

Mr. Stanley Preece has been appointed organizer for the Manchester and Liverpool areas of the Association, in succession to Mr. L. Hinder, who has recently been transferred to London as national organizer.

Mr. Preece has been concerned with organization work in connection with labour problems and his association with Messrs. S. Preece and Sons, a Crewe haulage firm, has enabled him to gain a first-hand insight into operators' difficulties. General reorganization is being carried out at the Manchester office 'of the C.M,U,A.

Mr. W. L. Paynter, who was principal of the Forth Engine and Motor Works, Newcastle-on-Tyne, has oPened on his own account as a mechanical and consulting engineer, with offices and works at 10, King Edward Bridge, Newcastle, 1. He is one of the outstanding figures in road-motor en gineering in the north-east, with an interest going back to the early Foden steamers.

He is now operating as agent for Foden oil-engined vehicles, as Guy and Gardner spare-parts stockist, also as agent for Centrard and Centricast cylinder liners.

To mark the 25th anniversary of his association with Maidstone and District Motor Services, Ltd., a presentation was made to Mr. G. F. French, director and general manager. Mr. Percy E: Graefe, secretary and commercial manager of the company, presided at the function, and the presentation was made by Mr. A. E. Leaney, one of the oldest employees.

The Biggest Road-traffic Census.

. On Monday last, a week's comprehensive road-traffic census was begun in every part of the country, except the county of London, separate records for which are kept by the Commissioner of Police. At least 10,000 enumerators are engaged and they are keeping watch at between 5,000 and 6,000 selected points. A feature of the census is that a poll is being taken of pedestrians and pedal cyclists.
