T N view of the fact that the M. of T. regulations stipulate .1 that side guards -will have to be fitted to heavy motorcars and motorcars (other than those constructed solely for the carriage of passengers and their effects and adapted to carry not more than seven exclusive of driver) where there is a clear space of more than 2 ft. between the wheels and the nearest point along the sides of the vehicle, and that such guards must be provided by January 1st, 1933, it is interesting to refer to a type which has been developed by Mr. C. Davis, Edwyn Lawn, Kingsholm, Gloucester.

This guard, which is shown temporarily fitted to an Albion 4-5-ton lorry, is so arranged that whilst it is securely held in the vertical position in service, it can, in a moment, be brought into the horizontal position, thus affording access to the under part of the vehicle or permitting the guard to be lifted clear of any obstruction.

Cases have occurred where side guards have had to be cut away to release injured persons, and it would appear that such a guard as this might be lifted clear in much shorter time.

In the vehicle shown in the illustrations, the ordinary running board has been removed, whilst the step plate to the driver's cab has been incorporated with the guard, and it does not project to the exterior. The device is protected and is of such a .simple and practical nature that, provided it can be manufactured at a reasonable cost, it should overcome many of the objections which have been made hitherto against the adoption of side guards.
