SIXTY-SEVEN applications have been received for hauliers to be registered with the National Joint Training Committee and 34 young men have been registered for training under the Young HGV Driver Training scheme.

Giving this information to a meting cf the Associaticn cr Industrial Road Safety Officers last week, Mr Gordon Ashbury, RTITB training officer (hgv), explained that the RTITB was helping out the Committee, the governing body for the scheme, with the administration.

It was the Committee which processed the applications from the employers both for registration of their companies as eligible to accept trainees and for the acceptance of trainees themselves.

Of the 67 applications received from companies for registration, 45 had been accepted, five had been refused and 17 were under consideration.

On application, a non-returnable deposit of £5 was requesZed to cover administration costs. The applicant was then visited by a representative cf the Committee who discussed the applicant's particular needs and available facilities. If the application was accepted, then the original deposit was deducted from the registration fee of £10 for a small company lr £25 for a company employing more than 25 drivers.

The company would also be asked to pay a registration fee for each trainee. This amounted to £10 for each Class 3 hgv licence trainee and £5 for each subsequent class.

There were very strict controls over training and progress of the trainee. There were safeguards for the employer against taking on a young man and then finding that he was not altogether suitable.

A clean group A Part 3 licence was essential for any trainee as any endorsement at the initial stage of applying for a Class 3 provisional hgv licence disbarred the issue of that licence.

After the trainee h a d obtained his Class 3 licence, he was allowed one endorsement, but if he obtained a second, he was automatically barred and his agreement with his employer as a trainee under the scheme was rendered void.
