Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

OOof the best-known makers in, with the supply of all types of petrol, paraffin or. Dieselmotor roller, of weights from 1i ton to 18 tans, is Barford and Perkins, Ltd., of Peterborough. The well-known T series of three-roll, water-ballast inachines possess many special features, including a third speed giving over 4 m.p.h., to be used while travelling from job to job and when scarifying. The water-ballasting arrangement enables a roller to be reduced in weight for crossing bridges ; another feature is the patent sprung steering head.

The Diesel-engined models start from cold on heavy oil in under one minute. The power units of these have two vertical cylinders, and operate on the four-stroke cycle. A centrifugal governor enables the speed to be regulated to between 200 r.p.m. and 800 r.p.m. Starting is effected by means of a small air-cooled motorcycle engine mounted over the flywheel of the Diesel motor, the connection between them being made by a small friction wheel.

Quick-reversing rollers are made in weights from 6 tons to 10 tons, and are designed especially for asphalt. Then, there are light, three-roll appli

'aloes designed for municipal authorities and contractors. Finally, there isthe new B series, which includes small machines weighing from 3 tons to 4 tons.

The Marshall-Universal steam roller, built by Marshall, Sons and Co., Ltd., of Gainsborough, is claimed successfully to combine the advantages of the standard three-roll and the tandem two-roll patterns. The rolls are adaptable to any required road camber, and the weight can be increased by filling the rolls with sand or water ballast. Thc front rolls can be locked horizontally for fiat surfacing. A double H.P. piston-valve engine supplies the power, and it is equipped with a quick-acting reversing gear.

A particularly interesting type of steam road roller is the Advance, made by Wallis and Stevens, Ltd., of Basingstoke. This machine was the first to be equipped with a spring device for providing automatic setting of the rear rolls to conform with the camber of the road. It also has a front roll which can be locked in the horizontal position. The engine, in this case,. also, is arranged to give quick-reversal. , Several useful types of motor roller

are made by Itobey and Co., Ltd., of Lincoln, amongst these being the Clearside tandem, which has been so designed that it can roll close up to a wall or building, as any protruding mechailieei is confined to the off side.

The Lafily rollers marketed by the Laffiy (England) Co., Ltd. of 20-26, Lansdale Road, London, N.W.6, form a range from 5 tons to 16 tons, and are. equipped as standard with paraffin motors, although the larger types can, if required, be supplied with semi-Diesel heavy-ail engines. It is claimed that the cast-steel rolls are practically unwearable. The engines can be started in a few moments; powerful brakes are provided and the machines are easy to control. In the type LL 5-ton and Se ton models the power unit, tegether with the gearing and controls, is carried in a cast-steel sub-frame, so that it can easily he removed in its entirety.

The three-roll steam machine is still the main product of Aveling and Porter, Ltd., of Rochester. The range of this type includes rollers weighing from 5 tons to 18 tons, and equipped with either simple or compound engines. Two sizes of tandem-type, quick-reversing steam rollers are also made with double H.P. engines and small steam steering engines to give ease and rapidity in handling. The latter type is used for bituminous carpeting, rolling tar macadam and for patching work. A further model is the Aveling crude-oil roller with a slow-running Diesel engine as the motive unit.
