Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

INTERNATIONAL HAULIER: MORE THAN 10 VEHICLES LOCATION: Maytown, Ballycotton, Co Cork FOUNDED: 1949 as a small concern; became Ballycotton Transport in 1989 CONTACT: Brian Hennessy, transport manager FLEET SIZE: 16, including Daf, Scania and Volvo CONTRACT: Meat in reefers Three Hennessy brothers (pictured) are involved in Ballycotton Transport. Noel (left) drives on Continental routes, Sean drives on domestic routes and Brian is transport manager. Between them they have invaluable hands-on relationships with customers-as do the other drivers, who know managers at customers' plants and liaise directly with them to prevent delays.

"Drivers have a good rapport with all the transport managers which makes a big difference. It's a big help," says transport

manager Brian Hennessy.

The company specialises in international work. hauling refrigerated trailers for Dawn Meats, Charleville Foods and a French company which imports meat from Ireland.

Five refrigerated trailers have been adapted for this company with a special rail for moving meat directly from truck to store.

"The special rail cuts down on manpower and it is very fast, but means the trailers become more expensive than an ordinary one," says Hennessy.

Their 16 trucks include Dafs, Scanias and Volvos; among them is a new Scania R500, two new Daf 95XF 480s and two Volvo FH12 Globetrotters.

"The Volvos are great for driver comfort, especially when you are sleeping in the cabs," says Hennessy.

Trucks are kept for three or four years and are maintained in-house, which is convenient and helps to minimise downtime.

The quality of vehicle is one reason drivers tend to stay and many have been with the company for years. They receive in-house training.

Ballycotton has been a member of the IRHA since 1972. Sponsoring the local GM hurling club, Russell Rovers, is a source of great pride -this year a club player will play for the county in the All-Ireland final.
