This is one of the industry's few large family haulage firms, involving no less than four daughters and two sons of founders Eugene and Virginia O'R6lly.

It began in 1972 in Newry with one truck and is now one of the largest transporters of freight out of Dublin Port The site includes offices, workshops, park ng, warehousing and a Department of Environment vehicle testing station.

The 100 Volvos and Scanias and 500 trailers are maintained and tested on site. Trucks are replaced every seven years and 50 curtainsided trailers were recently delivered from SDC (South Derry Coachworks). Expansion continues apace; the company is completing a UK depot and warehouse complex in Heysham.

Its other interests include groupage businesses in Dublin and Bradford along with operations in Belfast and Warrenpoint.

Training forts 2(X) employees is carried out inhouse. "We have training in health and safety and every other aspect of our services," says MD Eugene O'Reilly. "We train everybody we take on. It's not easy to recruit and retain staff, but it is something you have to be successful at — you can't be a haulier without people We create an atmosphere for a happy workforce," The firm was among the first in Ireland to be awarded ISO certification; it now has its own quality system. This improves administration and strengthens customer service, as do the company's computer systems. These linked all the company's offices via a VPN (virtual private network) before the internet was popular

Customers can access their own information via this network, which is now available on the web.

O'Reilly is involved in the IRHA, his local Chamber of Commerce and the Freight Transport Association. The firm sponsored the Meath Gaelic football team and the Ratoath under-10 camcgie (female hurling) team, which includes three grand-daughters of a proud Eugene O'Reilly.
