• An Irish truck driver who flouted weight restrictions on the day after he was caught overloading was fined more than £3,500 by a Scottish court last Tuesday (6 September).
James Cullen, of Canal Avenue, Mullingar, was carrying fruit for Ballyhaunis, County Mayo-based Lenaghan International Transport when he was stopped and found to be overloaded.
Procurator Fiscal Frank Walkingshaw told Stranraer Sheriffs Court that Cullen had been caught at the Castle Kennedy weighbridge near Stranraer Ferry during a routine check.
Cullen had been on his way to board the ferry back to Ireland. He was allowed to go to a nearby yard to unload and was then given the all-clear.
But Walkingshaw added: "He then returned to the yard and was seen by two traffic examiners working at the rear of the trailer. He was reloading the pallets."
On the following day the lorry was weighed again, found to be overweight and Cullen was kept in custody for two nights until his court appearance.
Cullen admitted four charges of excess train and axle weights, as well as a tachograph offence. His fines totalled £3,550.
