Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Commercial Motor has now driven the new Steyr UK range (CM 8-14 September).

Both the 195 28 and the 19S 31 tractive units, built for operation at 38 tonnes but with design weights of 46 tonnes and 50 tonnes respectively, come with the traditional allsteel Steyr cab. Now in its 20th year it looks remarkably modern but it is due for replacement in about two years' time.

Rated at 231kW (310hp), the top-of-the-range 195 31 may fall short of the power required by the market but, equipped with the Eaton Twin Splitter TS 11612 gearbox, it is smooth, easy and quiet to drive. By comparison the lowerpowered 19S 28 had heavier steering, heavier clutch and brakes, and a much less efficient gear change.

Among the rigid chassis the 13-tonne 135 18 and the 17tonne 17S 18 are powered by I the same 6.6-litre six-cylinder in-line turbocharged engine (pictured) driving through the new-generation six-speed Eaton 4106 gearbox.

Not surprisingly the ligher model is a real flyer. The rigid chassis cab is reminiscent of the Mercedes-Benz LN2 but, we are told, it is an original Steyr design.

All models are extremely well finished inside and out and proved to he quiet under test.
