• A fully-automatic torque-converter transmission with four speeds, known as the Model 45, has been introduced by BorgWarner Ltd, Letchworth, Herts. It is supplementary to, but will eventually supersede, the Model 35 three-speed transmission and its derivative, the model 65. A three-speed version of the Model 45, the Model 55, is currently being made in Japan but will also be produced in the UK later on. Catering for vehicles with engines up to 2 litres, the new transmission has ratios of 3.1 to 1, 1.94 to 1, 1.35 to 1 and 1 to 1 (top), the reverse ratio being 4.69 to 1. This compares with ratios of 2.39 to 1, 1.45 to I and 1 to 1 (top) of the Model 35 which has a reverse ratio of 2.09 to 1. Detailed improvements include a hydraulic control system designed to ensure smooth changes of ratio. The unit will be produced at a new factory at Kenfig, South Wales.
