ALEXANDER GRAHAM, of Dunoon, 'has acquired the haulage business formerly carried on at Dunoon by Oilco (Argyll), Ltd., and at Glasgow last Friday the Scottish Licensing Authority, Mr. W. F. Quin approved the transfer of the B licences held by Oilco for four vehicles of 131 tons on furniture within 20 miles radius, other goods within 20 miles and goods for the Forestry Estate.

Mr. J. Law said that the agreement had originally proposed leaving one vehicle with Oilco and transferring three, but it had been finally agreed to transfer all four.

Mr. Quin questioned whether the revenue justified the use of four vehicles, but was assured that there was considerable work available in the Cowal area and on this basis the application and transfer were granted in full.

Cohen Group Profits Down

A RECORD group turnover, but a Pl. reduction in profit-to-turnover ratio in the year ending March 31 last, are announced by the chairman of the George Cohen 600 Group, Ltd., Mr. Cyril M. Cohen, in his statement to be submitted to the annual meeting on September 27.

Group turnover was £38,979,000, an increase of 7.3 per cent. Net profit was £650,246, as against £784,890 in the previous year.

Mr. Cohen explains that there were substantially improved profits from the machine tool and steel stockholding activities and satisfactory results from home-based merchanting businesses and from K. and L. Steelfounders and Engineers, Ltd., and G. Beaton and Son. Ltd.

FIR. DAVID LEWIS, third man home

in the first single-handed transatlantic sailing race, has told the full story of his experiences in a book which will be published by Temple Press Limited on September 27.

Entitled "The Ship Would not Travel Due West," it is a frank and fascinating account of how he sailed his 25-ft. sloop, "Cardinal Vertue," 3,100 miles across the North Atlantic to New York in 56 days, and then sailed her back to •the Shetlands by way of Newfoundland. The price of the book is 21s.

EIGHT, NOT 13

IN the August 25 issue of The Conii mercial Motor the featttre "Expansion Trends in Haulage" referred to an application in the Metropolitan traffic area by F. W. Webber, Ltd., Enfield, Middlesex. This was an application to convert eight vehicles from contract A to B-licensed operation, and not 13 vehicles as stated.
