Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE application by Southdown Motor Services, Ltd., to increase fares on their stage carriage services, has been granted by the South Eastern Traffic Commissioners, pending the publication of the revised charges.

The application was to produce an additional revenue of £138,000 a year and was necessitated by recent increases in costs, in particular the wage award operative from May last. These, together with the increase of 3d. per gallon in the tax on fuel oil will cost the company approximately £199,000 a year.

Despite objections from certain local authorities, five of whom were represented at the hearing, the Traffic Commissioners held that the additional revenue that the company was seeking was required.

Call for Rural Bus Assistance

AT a meeting of the Rural District Councils Association at Scarborough last week a resolution approved expressed the. view that the only way to maintain diminishing rural bus services was by assistance from the Exchequer and the County Councils.

In the discussion it was claimed that part of the trouble was caused by the take-over of small companies by big companies, who would not operate services which did not pay.
