Ma. F. R. STAGG, M.I.Struct.E., assistant managing director of Thos. W. Ward,Ltd., of Sheffield, since 1938, has been appointed a joint managing director of the company. MR, II. W. SECKER, who has been a director since 1938, has been appointed an assistant managing director.

MR. HAROLD WHEATLEY, who for 26 years has been general manager's secretary in the Bradford Passenger Transport Department, succeeds Mr. T. B. Moseley in the post of chief. clerk and stores superintendent of the undertaking. Mr_ Wheatley, whose predecessor is retiring after 44 years' service in this department of municipal activity, joined the staff 40 years ago.

MR. E. W. JOHNSTON, who, as joint honorary secretary for some time past, has dealt with the secretarial work connected with the Diesel Engine Users Association, is resigning owing to illness. An honorary member and pastpresident of the Association, he has for 26 Years taken a prominent part in its affairs. He is succeeded, as secretary. by MR. HAMISH FERGUSON, who for some months has been assisting him in the work. We are pleased to hear that Mr. Johnston is making a, good recovery.

MR. A, H. L. THOMPEON, publicity manager of Fodens, Ltd., Elworth Works, Sandbach, Cheshire, has been secretary and treasurer of the company's recreation club for 24 years. On Tuesday of last week Mr. W Foden, presenting Mr. Thompson with a cheque for £80, said that he (Mr. Thompson) started with the concefn as a boy 37 years ago, and had always put his back into everything he did. It was for his valuable services to the club, said Mr. Foden, that he was being honoured. Mr. Thompson was made a life member of the club and the ceremony included the unveiling of his portrait.

ALD. WALTER BRADLEY, 3.P., governing director of Walter Bradley (Engineers), Ltd., Bolton, has just relinquished the presidency of the Municipal Passenger Transport Association. His wider activities include the chairmanship of the National Joint Industrial Council for the road passenger-transport industry, membership of

the Transport Advisory Council, committee member of the Motor Agents' Association, the War Savings Committee of the paesenger-transport industry. the Regional Liaison Committee for the concentration of the motor industry, and of a special committee set up by the Institute of Transport for dealing with matters relating to education. He has served on the Bolton Town Council since 1921.

MAJOR-GENERAL C. W. MAcEE0o, C.B., C.M.G., D.S.O., has been appointed by the Minister of War Transport to be Regional Transport Commissioner,. North-Western Region, and he took up his appointment last week, up to when he was Deputy Director of Supplies and Transport at the War Office. He has served in the Army for a considerable time, and was Director of Supplies and .Transport until his retirement in 1937. For some time he was employed by the M.O.S. as a civilian production officer, but was later re-appointed as Deputy Director of Supplies and Transport. The vacancy in the North-Western Region arose through the death of Sir William Chamberlain, M.Inst.T., which occurred in May of this year.

MR. JOHN SHEARMAN, M.I.Mech.E.. road motor engineer of the L.M.S. Railway Co., is the new president of t h e Institution o f Automobile Engineers for the session 1944245, and he will deliver his presidential address, entitled " History and Conjecture," at a general meeting of the Institution to be held in the Hall of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Storey's Gate, London, SAVA, on October 3, at 6.15 P.m. The early part of his address indicates the development of inland transport in England in the years from 1800 to 1840. A description then follows of the serious efforts made inthe latter half of that period to introduce mechanical road transport by steam. In the latter part of the address the possibilities of again using home-produced fuels on motor vehicles' are discussed. During the present war. Mr. Sheen-Tian has been a member of committees advising Government departments upon alternative fuels for motor vehicles, and he is chairman of the road committee of the Railway Executive Committee. He is responsible for one of the largest fleets of road motor vehicles in the country.
