ALTHOUGH car and commercial vehicle sales are climbing, those in the bus and coach sector continue to look bleak. Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders bus and coach registration figures for September total just 200 which is 38 less than in the same month last year and equivalent to a 16 per cent drop.
Market leader Leyland accounted for most of this decline with sales down from 132 in September 1 98 2 to 96 last month. This reduced figure still gave Leyland a 48 per cent market share last month. On sales so far this year Volvo is a distant but improving second and last month sold 22 chassis which is seven more than in September 1982.
MCW occupies third place with sales so far this year standing at 311 compared with 145 at the same time last year, although its September figure was down on that of last September.
Bedford sales are running substantially lower than last year and September was no exception — 15 chassis were registered last month as against 20 in September 1982 — but this was enough to keep fourth place for the year so far.
Since last year Daf has overtaken Ford in the psv sector (1983 Daf sales to date stand at 200 compared with Ford's 173) but Daf had a poorer September and sold only four chassis to Ford's eight. Hestair Dennis did a little better last month, registering 15 chassis, but its year to date sales are still down from 144 last year to 118.
