kitchen will enable hot meals to be served around the clock, but this great leap forward won't be completed until sometime in 1978.

The most visible sign of building, however, is in the rush to complete the long graceful flyover from the port to the new by-pass on top of the famous white cliffs. It is expected to be opened "any moment now,but is far more likely to be in service this December.

When opened, it will link with the Dover by-pass to complete the A2-M2 route from London to Dover. Apart from a short stretch around Canterbury — and the by-pass, itself — the route will be motorway or dual carriageway all the way.

FOLKESTONE Folkestone Harbour used to provide self-catering rooms for lorry drivers, as well as showers and toilets. "Used to" is the operative phrase; they are now out of order, having been vandalised by "person or persons unknown" some time ago.

The dock officials would like to reopen the facilities, but the money isn't there for repairs, and until it's found the rooms will stay shut.

There are no repair facilities for trucks on the docks, nor a bank or other shops. Any arrangements for foreign currency would have to be taken care of in town, during normal banking hours.

According to a British Rail spokesman (Folkestone, of course, is a BR port), any telex facilities would be available in "dire trouble" only.

On the brighter side, Folkestone has three Relais Routier establishments. The Beaumont Private Hotel, with eight rooms, is only two minutes from the docks, while further down the road is the Guest House, with 12 rooms. The Normandie Guest House, run by a French ex-lorry driver, has 13 rooms and predominately continental clientele, which might indicate that the food's good.

The main road to Folkestone is the A20-M20, almost all of it dual carriageway or motorway. With the proposed link-up of the M20 with the M25 south of London, traffic around the capital will be vastly speeded. The problem, of course, is that the proposed link-up may not occur in our lifetimes NEWHAVEN The Newhaven terminal is a British Rail harbour. The buffet

The import freight area in Dover with their customs clearance.

(called, cleverly enough, The Buffet) was deemed worthy of a complimentary mention in Egon Ronay's Guide to Transport Cafes.

It's open from 8.30 am to 8.30 in the evening every day — except during the summer when it stays open until midnight. For those unwilling to take Egon Ronay's word about the quality of the food there (he says it's "very good") self-catering is available. It was put in because of the increasing number of Spanish drivers passing through the port who indicated an interest in cooking their own dishes.

Showers and toilets are provided in the docks, as well as a waiting room, newly renovated, for lorry drivers in transit. There are two change bureaux that operate -whenever there is a service."

There is a leased weighbridge on the west side of the docks, and another one just inside the gates on the north side. There is no lorry breakdown service just yet, but two different companies have said they will operate a 24-hour emergency number, and an agreement between the port authorities and the companies is to be signed soon.
