THE SCOTTISH firm of Fulton and Wylie has displayed its nev all-alloy fire appliance. The company claims that the swing towards aluminium was influenced by the metal's higl resistance to water and weather attack.

Another factor considered in the design was that a general overhaul of a timber appliance with repairs and repaint could cost up to E2,00C which could be overcome with the use of alloy.

The tender, on show at the Harrogate Fire Fighting and Prevention exhibition on Tuesday, has been built in three main sections with the nearside and offside locker assemblies and the crew cab being fabricated in different unit assemblies using stock size extrusions and sheets.

The all alloy machine is 7.3m (24ft) long, 3.05m (10ft) high and 2.24m (7ft 8in) wide and is based on a Dodge K850 chassis with a Perkins 540 V8 engine.

Its weight when Complete with all equipment, 1818 litres (400 gal) of water, driver, officer in charge and four crew is approximately 9.6 tonnes (9tons lOcwt).
