It is expected that the average gross loading of the outfits will be in the region of 28 tons and the tractive-units and trailer-equipment have been chosen to handle this g.v.w. at speeds in excess of 60 m.p.h. when cruising on motorways.

The container bodies are mounted on Crane Fruehauf DB-F2 semi-trailer chassis, fitted with three-line air-pressure braking, operating 16-5 in. by 7 in. S cam units, and are to be towed by Leyland Beaver Ergomatic-cabbed tractive-units. The new fleet will comprise 60 vehicles and about 80 per cent of the operations will be serving destinations that will be within 30 miles of the motorway network planned to be in operation by 1970. To accommodate the variation of density in frozen food cargoes, the outfits will be capable of operating up to 30 ton g.v.w.

When the first of the new vehicles was introduced on Monday, Mr. C. A. Cardy. transport services manager of Birds Eye, said that his company's business was to manufacture and market quick-frozen foods. They were not interested in setting up as a haulage concern.
