Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

For the commercial motor user, the feature of the International Road Conference which first attracts attention is the display of motor yehieles which are used for the care and upkeep of streets. It was probably a surprise to most of the visitors to find that the City of Paris had made such an extensive use of motor vehicles for road cleansing.

Amongst the novelties is an interesting motorcycle street-sweeper, which collects its sweepings. The motive power of the machine is a single-cylinder air-cooled motor, with drive to the rear wheel by means of a reducing gear and single chain. From the projecting spindle of the rear wheel a large gear wheel engages with a similar wheel on the shaft of the revolving brush, which is placed at right angles to the motorcycle; this shaft is supported on the outside by means of another pneumaticshod bicycle wheel, and this is linked up to steer with the front wheel. As the revolving brush is placed absolutely at right angles to the line of the machine's progress, the dirt is naturally thrown ahead, and is collected in a long pan placed close to the ground. Immediately to the front of the collecting pan is a large dust bin, into which the refuse can be emptied as desired, merely by the operation of a lever, and without the driver's leaving his seat. in strange contrast to the motorcycle sweeper, is a ponderous machine, shown by a German syndicate, for the rapid washing of wood and asphalt streets. The vehicle is driven hy means of storage batteries, and a motor to each of the front wheels. A transverse drum, placed diagonally across the rear, and driven by enclosed gear from the rear wheels, is composed of a number of rubber blades. A large water tank is carried on the body of the ye hide, and the two sprinklers arc placed well to the front.

The English delegates, who includt Col. Crompton, chairman of tilt-.

C.M.U.A., have been received mos cordially.
