The report states that at the end of last March 502 miles of motorway were in use in England, 77 miles having been opened during the preceding 12 months, while work had started on nearly 50 miles more. Nearly 50 miles of M1 and 10 miles of M18 had been completed during that period.

The trunk and principal road network was also being improved. The report states that some 400 miles of new or improved highclass all-purpose roads were under construction or in the "firmprogramme. About 750 miles of trunk road and 400 miles of principal road now had dual carriageways.

Mr. Robert Brown, Joint Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport, opened the eight-mile Penrith by-pass (M6) last week. He described the £10m stretch of motorway as "a great achievement—in terms of cost, of expertise, of effort, of strategic value".

Cumberland County County has accepted the £7,021,600 tender of Tarmac Civil Engineering Ltd. for work on the seven-mileslong Carlisle by-pass.

The Minister of Transport has accepted the £200,000 tender of G.E.C. Road Signals Ltd., for the supply and installation of computercontrolled traffic signals to be installed on 62 miles of motorways in Yorkshire.
