Joint with Collet Fixing PAA NEW type of ball joint for linkage mechanisms has been developed by The Coventry Movement Co. Ltd., of Coventry. Designed primarily for use in carburetter, gear-shift and similar linkages, the new joint incorporates a simple collettype locking device for connection to plain link rods which dispenses with the need for threading the ends of the rods and the use of lockouts. The collet also permits easier endwise adjustment for length.

Tests conducted on the new joint with 0.25 in. diameter rod are said to have shown the collet holds fast up to 5-6 cwt. load. Two sizes are being made at present: 502CF which is suitable for 0.25 in. diameter rod and giving 0.5 in. adjustment in length and 512CF for 0-375 in. diameter rod with 0.75 in. length adjustment.

Makers: The Coventry Movement Co. Ltd., Coventry.

Fire-fighting Chemical nEMONSTRATIONS were given in London last week of the

effectiveness of a new fire fighting chemical developed by Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd. Called bromochlorodifluoromethane, BCF for short, it is a vapourising liquid, intended for use against class B and C fires—flammable liquid and electrical equipment fires respectively.

BCF was shown in the demonstrations to be particularly suitable for use on petrol and paint fires, being very quick and efficient in putting out various types of fire which were started. Three types of extinguisher developed to use BCF and which are suitable for use in commercial vehicles or workshops were employed. Of these, two developed by The Pyrene Co. Ltd. are now available whilst the third, by Wilkinson Sword Ltd. will be marketed shortly.

The Pyrene units have capacities of 12 oz. and 3 lb. of BCF, the Wilkinson Sword extinguisher holding 3 lb, also. When discharged, the cylinders of the 3 lb. sizes are replaced. in the case of the 12-oz. Pyrenc, the extinguisher is returned to the makers for re-charging.

Makers: The Pyrene Co. Ltd., Great West Road, Brentford, Middx. Wilkinson Sword (Colnbrook) Ltd., Poyle Mill Works, Colnbrook, Slough, Bucks.

Price: Pyrene 12 oz., £3 9s. 6d.; recharging. 11 2s. 6d. Pyrene 3 lb., £9 10s.; replacement cylinder about £5 10s.

Batteries for A.C.

QURPRISE exhibits at the Scottish Show were a range of

batteries introduced by Lucas and C.A.V. specially for use, on passenger chassis having a.c. generators. The batteries have a greater resistance to overcharging and will take a higher sustained rate of charge than normal batteries without detriment to their lives.

Three models make up the range, the AC 120, AC 140 and AC 175, all being 6V., and the capacity is indicated by the figures in the model designations. In each case width is 6.9375 in. and height is 9.875 in., the length varying according to model and being 12.0625 in., 14.3125 in. and 17.3125 in. respectively. Weights are 67, 76 and 90 lb. respectively.

Features of the batteries include improved dual separation, minimum length intercell connections, newly designed splash plates which give a more positive indication when topping up, new anti-corrosion cones, heavy carrying handles and restyled moulded-rubber containers.

Makers: Joseph Lucas Ltd., Birmingham; C.A.V. Ltd., Acton, London, W.3.

Prices: AC 120, 115: AC 140, 116 10s.; AC 175, f19 10s.
